What is Kids Counselling?

Youth counselling and kids counselling are specialized forms of therapy dedicated to supporting the unique emotional, social, and developmental needs of young people.

Growing up in today’s world is complex. Children and teens face pressures that can sometimes feel overwhelming. Unlike adult therapy, kids counselling uses age-appropriate methods—such as play-based activities, art, and guided conversation—to help children express their feelings, develop coping skills, and understand their experiences.

For youth and teens, counselling provides a confidential, non-judgmental space to talk about challenges like anxiety, depression, identity, and peer relationships. Our goal at Back in Motion Wellness is to provide your child with a practical toolkit for resilience, self-esteem, and positive mental health that will support them long after therapy ends.

Youth & Kids Counselling: Frequently Asked Questions

Yes, confidentiality is crucial for building trust. While sessions are private, the legal rules for children are different than for adults. We will clearly explain the limits of confidentiality to you and your child, and we will always involve parents if there is a concern for your child’s immediate safety.

If you notice persistent changes in their mood (sadness, irritability), behaviour (withdrawal, aggression), or school performance, it’s a good sign to seek support. Trust your gut—counselling can be a proactive step even for smaller worries.

This depends on your child’s age and needs. For younger children, parent involvement is often a key part of success. For older youth, we typically work one-on-one while maintaining regular check-ins with you. We will create a plan that works best for your family.

Sheila Jensen is experienced in working with a wide range of young people. Our kids counselling services are generally for children (approx. 3-12), while our youth counselling supports teens.

Many extended health plans in Manitoba include coverage for counselling. We Direct Bill to many 3rd party companies, please enquire if we cover yours!
